The Likely Lads (1964 - 1966)

This sitcom set in Newcastle suffers from the BBC's unfortunate policy to wipe the tapes on which the television programmes were recorded. Of originally twenty episodes only eight survived. Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, a sequel consisting of 27 episodes, was broadcast 1973 - 1974. Also a feature film of the same title as the original programme was released in 1976.

Terry Collier (James Bolam) and Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes) are two working-class lads in their twenties working in a factory. The show is packed with Geordie slang and references to popular culture of the time. The tension between the aspirational and optimistic Bob, who is the more serious of the two, and Terry with his carefree and impish attitude is the source of many comical situations.
