Dad's Army (1968 - 1977)

Set during the World War Two a platoon of the local home guard is preparing to defend Britain against the imminent German invasion. Consisting mostly of local volunteers unfit for service due to age, ailment or by practicing a profession exempt from conscription, the group is not exactly top soldier material.

Full of references to real wartime events and stereotypical characters such as the spiv or the corporal who served under Kitchener, the humor of the programme is a mixture of screwball and slapstick comedy. Although set against the serious backdrop of the Second World War the programme retains a light-hearted spirit probably best exemplified by the first verse of the theme song: "Who do you think you are kidding Mr. Hitler?"
